Re-Austenitisation of Thin Ferrite Films in C–Mn Steels during Thermal Rebound at Continuously Cast Slab Corner Surfaces

The influence of primary cooling and rebound temperature at C–Mn slab corner surfaces during continuous casting on ferrite film transformation AlN precipitation was investigated. Laboratory simulations included to minimum temperature, Tmin, rebounding various maximum temperatures, Tmax, followed by secondary cooling. negative effect a low Tmin hot ductility could not be readily reversed, even relatively high temperatures. Quantitative metallography employed study the evolution microstructure Following temperatures just above Ar3, thin films allotriomorphic formed austenite grain boundaries. These did completely transform 3 °C/s up as 1130 °C persisted slow simulated straightening operation. Whilst dilatometry indicate presence after provided clear evidence its existence, albeit in very small quantities. Coincident with these predicted (TC-PRISMA) boundary bcc iron from 730 °C. Importantly no were observed, occur when restricted 830 Cooling below this promotes precipitation, which both increase risk cracking steels.
